Every year, my whole family gets together sometime before Christmas day. We gather in the family room, with the tree glowing in the corner, order some Chinese food, and watch A Christmas Story. It doesn't matter that we all know all the words, or that we've all seen it dozens of times before - in fact, it makes it even better. We all laugh at 'Mommie's little piggy' and the pink bunny suit, at the furnace fighting and the traumatic Santa episode. Together. It's not just our Christmas movie, it's part of the family.

Date: 2011-12-15 03:52 am (UTC)No way my mother would let me watch that movie. She was ultra strict about stuff like that. Yet I love this movie like I love oxygen. It's wonderful for me! That said, it's not for everyone. It's one of those things that resonates with some folks and not with others. No worries. To each their own and all that.

Date: 2011-12-15 02:35 pm (UTC)No cursing, no sex, and no violence of any kind was allowed if my mom could help it. (As we grew, she did amend, and she always allowed the stupid stuff, like The A-Team, etc - turns out that like most Americans, she can overlook violence first but she still gets her panties in a twist over a supposed "dirty word.") It was crazytown. And my mom simply doesn't get irony. I mean, no concept. And when you throw in the fact that A Christmas Story is all secular and shit? No way! As I like to say, I was raised in a religious household, and it took me a long time to overcome that. ;)
