A/N: Okay, it's utter crap and has no point, but this is all my worn down wittle brain could come up with, so... *sigh* sorry it's so sucky :o/
"Oh, Cap'n," said Kaylee, only half surprised to see Mal at her bunk. She stood back as he descended her ladder, a carton of Strawberry-Vanilla Stripe ice cream clutched in his hand and she sighed the sigh of a person who knows she's in for another long night.
He plopped himself down on Kaylee's bed and promptly began spooning scoops of ice cream into his mouth.
"'Nara kick you out again?" she asked wearily as she sat across from him.
Mal nodded. "Locked the shuttle," he said around the spoon in his mouth.
Sighing to herself, Kaylee listened to him grouse, closing her eyes resignedly when she heard the expected tentative knock at her door.
"Kaylee?" came Simon's confused voice.
"We're a might busy at the moment, Doc," Mal called up and there was a muffled 'again?' in response that Kaylee tried to cover with a cough.
"I'll just… be down in the infirmary, then," Simon called down glumly.
"Bye sweety," Kaylee called up after him apologetically, staring up at his voice wistfully.
"You got someplace you need to be?" Mal asked, spoon poised and laden with ice cream.
Kaylee's head whipped back around. "Uh, no! No place at all, Cap'n," she said with forced cheeriness. Mal glowered at her suspiciously for a moment before sucking a blob of ice cream from his spoon.
"You know what her problem is?" he said, gesturing with the utensil as he continued. "She ain't got no sense of humour."
"Oh, she does too," said Kaylee impatiently, scooping out a finger-full of ice cream, ignoring Mal's scowl as he seemed torn between anger and resignation. "You jus' don' like it when she can get the better of ya," she said around her finger.
"That—I—She don't get the better'a me!" he protested.
She rolled her eyes and gave him a pointed stare.
"Yeah, well… still ain't no reason for her ta have got so bent outta shape," he groused, shoving another spoonful of frozen treat into his mouth petulantly.
"Cap'n, you insulted her right in front a' her mother! Made her look the fool for stickin' up for ya. O' course she's upset!"
"I wasn't—! Well, she didn't—!" he stammered around the spoon. "'Sides, ain't even her real mother!"
Kaylee threw up her hands in exasperation. "That don't matter none!" she exclaimed. "'s still someone important to 'Nara, an' all she asked was for you ta be nice. But you gotta go gettin' all bad-tempered—"
"I was nice!" he interjected, feeling a might guilty over that if he were honest with himself.
"—and callin' 'Nara names, as usual! Start to think you really want her to leave, I didn't know better!" Kaylee snatched the carton of ice cream away from Mal. "An' she's gonna, too, you keep at her like that," she said angrily, waving the carton at him. She reached in for another finger-full, shaking her head. "You make her leave again, Cap'n… "
"Hey," he said, reaching for the carton, shrinking back under the ferocity of her glare.
"You need ta go apologize," she stated resolutely.
"Huwha? Apologize! For wha—I don't… She's the one snapped my suspenders! Weren't no call for-- 's my boat, Kaylee! I don’t apologize on my boat!"
Kaylee raised an eyebrow and gave him an appraising look. Standing, she walked over to her toilet, carton held out before her determinedly.
"Hey, now," protested Mal, worry creeping into his voice. He jumped up and stepped toward the mechanic but the young woman held up a warning finger, holding the carton half-tipped over the toilet.
"Apologize," she said firmly.
"Kaylee," Mal growled but it didn't phase her as she lifted her chin in defiance, tipping the carton slightly closer to upside down. Mal held up a pleading hand. "Kaylee, that ain't fair."
"Ain't about what's fair, Cap'n. 's about what's right."
"Forcin' me ta apologize don't make it right, neither," he complained.
Kaylee hesitated as she realized he was right. Damn. Sighing, she handed him the carton, shaking her head as he cackled gleefully. "You do know that strawberry-vanilla stripe is Inara's favourite flavour, right?" she pointed out. "An' that's the only carton on board?"
Mal's hand halted, spoon halfway to his mouth. He'd forgotten. He looked at the two-thirds empty carton, shoulders drooping in resignation.
"Make a nice peace offerin', dontcha think?" Kaylee persisted and Mal sighed. He dropped the spoon back in the carton.
"Gorrammit," he grumbled and headed for the ladder. Kaylee caught him at the bottom and gave him a quick peck on the cheek.
"I love my Captain," she beamed and Mal rolled his eyes good naturedly, a small smile working its way to his lips.
"Thanks, Kaylee," he said, and climbed up, heading off to Inara's shuttle.
Kaylee watched him go and shook her head with a sigh of relief now that she could go find Simon in the infirmary. "Finally!"

Date: 2006-11-13 04:37 pm (UTC)I so so so so sooooo adore your Kaylee in this! All adult and feisty and with ulterior motives in the back of her mind and standing up for Inara and all startling Mal with her disagreement. And him all "I don't apologize on my boat! *pout*" Hee!
And the Simon/Kaylee in this made me sooo happy, too, in a weird way, since there wasn't even much of it. But so adorable!
Thank you thank you thank you! The giggles were so sorely needed right now. :D *HUG-SQUISH*!

Date: 2006-11-13 05:17 pm (UTC)See, now I think you're just being nice or something... Really? I didn't think it was that funny or cute or even cracky...but *shrug* if you like it, I'm happy! :o)

hahah... Well, since we were putting Mal down in her bunk in the first place, I figured this has probably happened before, and frequently enough that it's commonplace. So, after a while, even Kaylee would tire of it *GRIN*
And him all "I don't apologize on my boat! *pout*" Hee!
You know he'd say that *G* That part I really do like *G*

LOL heheheh... I tried to imply that this wasn't the first time Mal's little visits to Kaylee's bunk had interferred with her and Simon's plans for the evening, and that Simon was less than impressed *giggle* all glum and pouty *G*
Thank you thank you thank you! The giggles were so sorely needed right now. :D *HUG-SQUISH*!
Oh, you're so welcome, welcome, welcome! :oD
But I'm sad to hear you're in such sore need of giggles!! Bad day at work, darlin? :o(
*big loveable huggles and cuddles to chase it away*

*snicker*
Poor Simon. Though one does wonder what he does in the infirmary, all the time, even when no one is injured and/or sick.

I know... you'd think he'd be bored to tears... maybe he does air surgery, and pretends he's doing fantastic operations *G* or maybe he's just alphabetizing his instruments *G*
